RIA Consolidation Trends: Mergers of Equals
New year. Old problems. The wealth management space has entered 2026 still grappling with challenges associated with a shortage of advisors, growing demand for advice and the transformation of the industry landscape itself: which is now an increasingly consolidated RIA industry that frankly has dropped the ball when it comes to developing and implementing organic growth drivers. Particularly for private-equity-backed enterprises, it often is more efficacious to buy capabilities (and headcount) than it is to upgrade internally. It’s a strategy that has caught up with the industry and is altering the M&A space dramatically.

RIA consolidation will accelerate in 2026
RIA merger and acquisition activity is on pace to pass 300 transactions this year, passing the previous annual record of 272 set in 2024. There were 127 RIA deals reached in 2019, a year that is seen as a turning point in when private equity began to aggressively pursue investing in registered investment advisors. Many of those investments are nearing the “maturity point” of private equity’s deal cycle.

Report: 20% of Wealth, Asset Managers to Be Acquired by 2029
The latest deal analysis from Oliver Wyman and Morgan Stanley predicts 1,500 “significant” transactions in the next five years across wealth and asset management.
According to a jointly produced annual report, the rampant dealmaking in the registered investment advisor and asset management sectors that kicked off around 2020 will intensify in the second half of the decade. The firms expect 1,500 “significant transactions” involving asset and wealth managers by the end of 2029, resulting in about 20% of existing firms being acquired.

The Great RIA Consolidation: Private Equity Reshapes Wealth Management
Private equity has officially conquered the registered investment advisor (RIA) landscape. It is now responsible for a significant portion of RIA-linked M&A activity, as the industry's unprecedented consolidation wave, building on momentum from 2024, reaches new heights in 2025.1 This evolving landscape, with much of the activity focused on firms with demonstrable growth potential, is creating both challenges and opportunities.
The primary opportunity lies in the market's fragmentation and diverse buyer motivations. This creates multiple pathways for successful transactions across different buyer types and target segments.
